Frequent Questions-FAQ

Our tallow cream remains usable for twelve months after opening. It has a relatively long shelf life because it contains no water components, minimizing the risk of microbial growth (such as bacteria or mold).

Factors that can affect the shelf life of tallow cream:

  1. Tallow quality: High-quality, well-purified, and properly rendered beef tallow lasts longer. It contains fewer impurities that could cause the product to spoil faster.
  2. Use of antioxidants: Ingredients such as vitamin E can act as natural preservatives. They slow down fat oxidation, which can extend shelf life.
  3. Storage: Store cool and dark! The cream should be kept in a cool, dark place to avoid oxidation and rancidity. Ideally, it should be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. It should be kept in an airtight container to protect it from moisture and oxygen. Oxygen can oxidize the fat and cause it to go rancid.
  4. Honey and essential oils can extend shelf life by inhibiting microbial growth or slowing oxidation. If the cream also contains beeswax, this can help further extend shelf life. Beeswax has a protective and preserving effect.

Smell test: Even after the expected shelf life has expired, tallow cream can usually still be used – as long as it does not smell rancid or have an unusual consistency or color.

Beef tallow has a fatty acid composition similar to the natural oils produced by human skin. Therefore, it is generally considered skin-friendly.

Whether tallow cream can clog pores depends on several factors:

  • Non-comedogenic for many skin types: Tallow contains fatty acids similar to human sebum, such as oleic acid and stearic acid. This makes it well tolerated by most people. It closely resembles the skin’s natural barrier and can be well absorbed without clogging pores.
  • Good for dry or sensitive skin: People with dry, sensitive, or mature skin benefit from tallow. It is rich and penetrates deeply without leaving a greasy residue. The likelihood of clogged pores is relatively low for these skin types.
  • Risk factor for oily or acne-prone skin: Individuals with oily or acne-prone skin may be more sensitive to tallow. On sebum-rich skin, additional fats can sometimes lead to clogged pores. While tallow is not highly comedogenic, those with blemished or acne-prone skin should use it cautiously to see how their skin responds.

Cream composition: Additional ingredients such as oils (e.g. coconut oil) can increase the risk of clogged pores, as some oils are more comedogenic than others. Coconut oil, for example, has a higher comedogenic potential and may cause breakouts in sensitive skin. Our tallows are made without coconut oil.

Yes, skincare products with tallow are suitable for children and babies, as long as they are made from natural ingredients. Tallow is derived from animal fat and is rich in nourishing vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. Our cream contains no synthetic additives, making it a great choice for sensitive skin.

However, it is important to ensure that the cream contains no added fragrances or essential oils, as these could irritate a baby’s skin. In such cases, we recommend using the Pure & Unscented version. Before applying to babies or young children, a patch test or consultation with a pediatrician is advised to rule out any individual sensitivities.

Cleanse your face and pat it dry. Take a small amount of the cream using clean fingers or a spatula. Warm the cream slightly in your hands and gently apply it to the skin, especially on dry or irritated areas.

The Tallow Cream can be used daily – in the morning, evening, or more often if needed. It is best applied after washing or showering, when the skin is clean and slightly damp. For dry or irritated skin, regular use is recommended to keep the skin soft and healthy.
